EFFECTS OF HEARING LOSS

Hearing loss is often undetected in the beginning. The sounds of life (birds singing, road noises when you are traveling, refrigerator noises, etc.) just gradually get more and more quiet. The hearing loss becomes more noticeable when communications with people become more difficult. It starts with the familiar "huh?" response, but after a series of being tired of asking people to repeat themselves, and also dealing with their frustration of having to repeat themselves, the person with hearing loss will usually retreat to a safe zone. This leads him/her to isolation from the family, friends, social gatherings, etc.

Relationships break down when communication is not flowing, and it doesn't flow when one or both people cannot hear what the other person is saying. So the effects can literally be devastating. Ulimately, the person with hearing loss can become depressed and withdrawn.
